How to hire the best Go Developers?

Go is an open-source programming language that was initially developed by Google in the year 2007. It is used for web development, cloud-based services, and also to create command-line interfaces. Many tech giants like Google, Uber, and Dropbox use Go. Developers find it simple and easy to pick up Go if they have knowledge of other programming languages.

If you’re looking to hire Go developers for your company, this guide is going to help you find the perfect fit. We’ve included everything you need to know about hiring a freelance Go developer.

Let's introduce Go to you

  • Go was first developed at Google in the year 2007 by by Robert Griesemer, Rob Pike, and Ken Thompson. It was launched in 2009 as an open-source programming language.
  • Go was developed to make programming efficient in compilation and execution, dynamic and easy to use.
  • Go was among the first of several new languages like Rust, Elixir, Swift, and more that have made development of programming language an active and popular field.
  • Go has its basic syntax taken from C language. Some inputs from the Pascal/Modula/Oberon family (declarations, packages) are added in as well.

Why is Go widespread?

  • Usage of Go is expanding all over the world mainly because of its scalability, efficiency and productivity.
  • Go has a huge demand in the cloud computing space to scale its systems, video streaming services for readability and security, mobility services to implement dynamic prices and email services for asynchronous exchanges and to avoid concurrency issues.

What are the tools used by Go developers?

The following are some of the tools used by Go developers at various stages of development:

1. IDE

  • GoLand - JetBrains' commercial IDE for Go Developers with amazing tool integration and coding support.
  • LiteIDE - simple cross-platform IDE for Windows, macOS, Linux, etc. which provides code management, configurable build commands, gdb and Delve debugger, and auto-completion.
  • Vim-go - a very powerful plugin that provides Go programming language support. Its features include advanced source code analysis, adding and removing import paths, multiple 3rd liner support, goto definition, quick file executions, and much more.

2. Frameworks

  • Revel - a high productive framework with a Hot Code Reload tool that lets developers rebuild projects on every file change.
  • Buffalo - not just a framework, a web development eco-system that lets developers build their applications.

3. Development Tools

  • Gonative - lets a developer build Go toolchains with native libraries which can be cross-compiled easily.
  • Apicompat - a tool that helps developers detect backward, exported declarations, and incompatible changes. Developers can abstain from fake positives using this tool.

Writing the Job Description to hire Go developers

Below are some key points that we at Flexiple have learned through trial and error - a process of filtering through over 15,000 developers. You can use these in your process to hire Go developers.

  • Years of software development experience: Be specific about the technology you’re looking for and the number of years of experience needed. A proxy to years of experience can be the number of production-level apps worked on.
  • Type of products built in the past: Based on the type of product you are trying to build - social network, SAAS product, etc. - you can prioritize certain developers over others.
  • Exposure to specific industries: Developers who have built products in certain industries will already know key aspects of laying the foundation for a great product and will be able to predict possible problems.
  • Experience working remotely: A developer with past remote work experience is an added advantage as they would have first-hand experience of everything - right from how contracts work to streamlined communication, as well as timelines and deliverables.
  • Strong communication: An essential thing to look at when hiring a freelancer is excellent communication skills. Since all the interaction happens online, a freelancer should be able to effectively communicate to ensure a streamlined execution of all work.

5. Interview Questions to hire Go developers

Now that you have made a quality JD, it can still be tricky to evaluate the skills of your applicants when you hire Go developers. To help you with that, we have created a pool of questions that a good Go developer should be comfortable with. It is important to note that the ability to answer these questions doesn't imply that you have a top quality candidate. But it definitely is a big step in that direction.

To help you navigate through these questions, we’ve categorized the interview questions in 3 parts:

A. Basic concepts: Includes all basic concepts used across languages but we've focused on their significance in Go. This will give you an understanding of how strong their programming foundation is.

B. Advanced concepts: Includes all concepts that someone with higher expertise should know.

C. DS/Algorithm questions: To test the logical capability of the candidate.
